The End of the Road for Tom Glavine?

A few weeks ago I wrote an entry here making the case for Tommy Hansen to begin the year in AAA because I was willing to see what Tom Glavine had left in the tank. It’s becoming evident that Glavine is running on fumes. Glavine experienced some shoulder discomfort while swinging a bat in a minor league rehab appearance on Sunday. Glavine was examined by Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday, and the diagnosis was an inflamed rotator cuff. Dr. Andrews recommended a two week rest period for Glavine followed by a reevaluation. Glavine has stated he won’t go through another extended rehab period, so he will likely retire if the discomfort isn’t better in two weeks.

This is certainly not the way Glavine wanted to end his career, but the 43 year old can’t do anything about it at this point but wait and see. This is frustrating for Glavine and his fans who wanted to see him get a chance at redemption. If this is the end of the road for Glavine, he finishes his career with a 305-203 record, two Cy Young Awards, 10 All Star selections, four Silver Sluggers, and a World Series MVP Award. This résumé should make him a first ballot Hall of Famer. Since he hasn’t appeared in a game this season he should be inducted alongside Greg Maddux. What a great day in Cooperstown that will be for Braves fans!
