Gear Up For Braves Baseball

Bobby Cox and the Curious Case of Relievers

3 Atlanta Braves are among tops in the league in relief appearances and 2 of those (Mike Gonzalez and Peter Moylan) are in their first year after having Tommy John surgery. Bobby Cox continues to use Moylan, and Gonzalez, especially, in non-essential situations. I am confused every time I see one of these two warm-up and enter a game where the run difference is 4 or more. Where is Medlen, or Acosta, or Logan use them in these situations instead of you top arms. Gonzalez even has had some arm trouble this year, even though he is a gamer and always wants the ball, the managers first goal must be to keep him healthy for tight games where the final outcome is in the balance and stop using him when it is not essential. If Cox has so little faith in Medlen, Acosta and Logan then the Braves needed to make a move to add help in the bullpen that Cox trust to use in a game situation. Could this be Tim Hudson? Would he accept this role? This remains to be seen but he is coming off Tommy John so Cox should have plenty of faith in his arm.
